GSE were recently contracted by Conrad Energy to undertake a breakdown repair, following an aftercooler failure, of an in-service 6 Series Jenbacher generator, installed at a STOR power generation site located in Flintshire, North Wales.
Limited access and lifting capacity within the container were considered during initial site assessment and to facilitate the safe removal of the 650Kg aftercooler a custom-made lifting beam was manufactured, and load rated, along with the supply of tested lifting equipment. To enable sufficient clearance to allowing removal of the cooler, the charge air inlet manifold, turbocharger, and plate cooler pipework had to be removed, prior to slinging the cooler core from the container compartment. An external lifting frame was also constructed outside of the container, allowing the cooler to be fleeted onto transport for a workshop repair at a specialist approved supplier.
