GSE were contracted by Colas Rail Ltd to carry out an ‘in-service’ examination of a Class 56 locomotive, which was reported to be experiencing excessive vibration issues during service.
Further examination of the English Electric power unit highlighted a failed generator strut, causing a subsequent misalignment of the Brush diesel powered generator.
In order to repair the generator and facilitate an overhaul of the engine, the complete power unit was removed from the locomotive and transported to GSE workshops.
The damaged generator was split from engine and sent for specialist overhaul at Anstee & Ware Ltd in Donnington, whilst the 16 Cylinder RK3C engine was subsequently overhauled by in-house GSE engineers.
Specifics of the engine overhaul included reconditioning of original cylinder heads, pistons and connecting rods, along with inspection and examination of main bearings and replacement of large end bearings and piston rings throughout.
Original Napier turbochargers were both overhauled and refitted, along with charge air and lubrication oil coolers.
On completion of overhaul work the original generator was re-aligned to the engine within the workshop. The completed power unit was transported back to the depot for fitment back into the locomotive.
