GSE were contracted by Arlington fleet services to carry out a scheduled service of a 16 Cylinder, EMD 645 Diesel powered, and Class 59 locomotive.
Key specifics of service included cylinder head replacement of several units, without removal of the complete power pack, to facilitate replacement of older type cylinder heads assembled without valve rotators.
Half pack replacement of x 2 additional cylinder units, requiring only the cylinder head, piston and liner to be replaced. This procedure allows the existing connecting rod and piston carrier to remain in-situ without disturbing any large-end bearings.
Along with full power pack replacement of an additional x 2 complete units: cylinder head, piston, connecting rod and cylinder liner, which includes replacement of large end bearings and re-tensioning of basket bolts as per OEM specification.
Subsequently the engine running gear was rebuilt on completion with unit injectors re-timed, fuel racks reset and Valve lash clearances reset on all cylinders The work was completed by a 4 man team of service engineers, over a 3 day period, whilst the locomotive was removed from traffic to complete maintenance exams.
